Uses ICRco’s Claris V to Save Injured Opossum and Unborn Babies

Santa Barbara, CA – The Santa Barbara Wildlife Care Network recently showcased the power of advanced veterinary imaging when an injured opossum was brought in after being struck by a car. Though alive, the animal was in critical condition and showing signs of severe trauma. Using the Claris V Cone Beam CT system from iCRco, Inc., staff performed detailed scans that revealed the full extent of the opossum’s injuries, including a fractured pelvis. The imaging also confirmed the presence of babies in the mother’s pouch — a key factor in guiding her care. As marsupials, opossums give birth to tiny, underdeveloped joeys that finish growing in the pouch, where they remain attached to teats for about five to six weeks.

This discovery dramatically changed the treatment plan. Guided by the imaging data, the Wildlife Care Network team stabilized the mother and managed her recovery in a way that protected her developing young. Thanks to the clarity and precision of the Claris V, the opossum not only survived but fully healed — and she and her babies were successfully released back to the wild.
The case is a powerful example of how modern imaging technology can transform wildlife rescue and rehabilitation. The Claris V, designed and manufactured by iCRco, Inc., is currently featured in the acclaimed IMAX documentary “Wild Rescue”—a visually stunning film that highlights the Santa Barbara Wildlife Care Network’s lifesaving work. The film is now playing at select IMAX theaters nationwide, bringing attention to both the challenges and triumphs of wildlife rehabilitation.
“Stories like this opossum’s remind us that every scan can change an outcome,” said Douglas Vail, Marketing Director at iCRco. “We’re proud to see the Claris V making a difference in the field and honored to see that story brought to the big screen through IMAX.”

The Santa Barbara Wildlife Care Network, a nonprofit dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and releasing injured or orphaned wildlife, relies on cutting-edge tools like the Claris V to give animals a second chance. Their team cares for thousands of patients each year — from seabirds and raptors to small mammals — helping ensure that wildlife in the region can return to their natural habitats. This case is a powerful example of how modern imaging technology, combined with skilled wildlife rehabilitation, can transform outcomes for animals in critical need.
